Claims FAQ
Claims questions, answered.
Should I call my broker or the insurance carrier first?+
During business hours, call your Truly Insurance broker first. We capture the facts, notify the carrier, and stay in your corner through the whole claim. If we're closed and it's an emergency, use the carrier's 24-hour line to report the loss, then tell us so we can advocate for you.
What information do I need to file an insurance claim?+
Have your policy number, the date and time of the incident, a description of what happened, photos of the damage, contact details for anyone else involved, and a police report number if one was filed. The more we have up front, the faster the claim moves.
How long does an Ontario insurance claim take?+
An auto or minor property claim can settle in days to a few weeks; a large fire or liability claim can take months as damage is assessed and repaired. We set expectations for your specific claim and check in with the adjuster so it doesn't stall.
Will filing a claim raise my insurance premium?+
It depends on the type and fault. A not-at-fault or comprehensive claim (like theft or hail) often doesn't surcharge your premium the way an at-fault accident does. We explain how a given claim will affect your renewal and re-shop it across 17+ insurers if the increase is harsh.
What if I disagree with the adjuster's settlement?+
You don't have to accept the first offer. We review the scope and settlement with you, push the adjuster on underpaid or missed items, and escalate to appraisal or a formal complaint when needed. Your broker is your advocate, not the insurer's.
Do I have to use the insurer's preferred repair shop?+
No. You have the right to choose your own repair shop, though a preferred network may offer a workmanship guarantee or faster turnaround. We make sure the choice doesn't cost you coverage on the approved estimate.
Can I report a claim online instead of calling?+
Yes. Each carrier's online claim portal is listed in the directory below, and we can also report on your behalf during business hours. Either way, let us know so we can track the file and advocate from the start.
